THUNDER BAY – A crash after a driver allegedly tried to race a train to a railway crossing has led to the arrest of a Thunder Bay man for the second time in three weeks on impaired driving charges.

One of the three passengers inside the vehicle suffered serious injuries, which are not considered to be life-threatening.

Police say the single-vehicle crash occurred at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3 on Crawford Avenue and Gore Street, with reports from witnesses detailing the vehicle in question was seen travelling at a high rate of speed toward the crossing when it became airborne and the driver lost control, crashing into a utility pole.

The driver attempted to run from responding officers, but was taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

Officers allegedly observed multiple signs of impairment from the driver and located open alcohol containers and paraphernalia consistent with drug use inside the vehicle.

The licence plate attached to the vehicle was also reportedly stolen.

The 32-year-old male driver was charged with impaired operation of motor vehicle causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, prohibited operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, breach of probation and breach of a release order.

The accused also faces a number of Highway Traffic Act charges and has been remanded into custody with a future appearance date.

It is Newswatch policy to not name people accused of crimes in which we do not anticipate following the case through to its conclusion in court.
