Crews working to repair highway washouts (2 photos)

Repairs crews are busy following this week's heavy rain.

GILLIES, Ont. -- Residents in Gillies and Neebing continue to deal with road damage and highway closures caused by heavy rains and flooding earlier this week.

This section of Highway 608 between Rose Valley Road and Chimo Road has been closed to traffic since Tuesday night.

A huge chunk of the roadway washed out after a culvert failed due to high, rushing water.

The Ministry of Transportation said the culvert needs to be replaced.

The repairs should get underway soon, and they expect the highway to reopen late on Saturday or on Sunday.

Meanwhile, repair crews were busy Thursday on a section of Highway 595 near Coulson Road.

Water levels on Auld's Creek overwhelmed the aging culverts and washed away the pavement.

The MTO said the new culverts are now in place, and they expect the highway to reopen to traffic Friday or on Saturday.
