Crime Stoppers may tweet eventually, but it’s all Facebook for now

While the local Crime Stoppers has adopted a Facebook page, the organization isn’t ready to venture into the world of hashtags and tweets. The Thunder Bay Crime Stoppers created their Facebook page last fall.

While the local Crime Stoppers has adopted a Facebook page, the organization isn’t ready to venture into the world of hashtags and tweets.

The Thunder Bay Crime Stoppers created their Facebook page last fall. While the organization is interested in other social media options, so far Thunder Bay Police Service Const. Julie Tibury says they do not have plans to create a Twitter profile right away.

The micro blogging social media network is relatively new, but other law enforcement agencies, such as the police force in British Columbia, have started to use Twitter to inform residents about crimes, emergencies and what they are doing in the community.

Tilbury said they don’t have the resources yet to handle a Twitter account, but admited that it is something Crime Stoppers wants to incorporate eventually.

“We’re waiting to get ourselves to full capacity,” Tilbury said. “They’re just getting a handle on Facebook and how it all works. It’s just time and energy to monitor an account.

“So at this point it’s a no, but (having a Twitter account) is not something they’re not considering.”

Tilbury said the Facebook page is updated when something happens in the community and added they use the page to better communicate with people and share information.
