A city councillor is blaming delays in construction around the city on the contractor failing to fulfill their contract.

With three projects not even started this year and other paving companies in Thunder Bay available, at-large Coun. Ken Boshcoff is wondering where the problem lies.

“Is it a problem with the tendering process or is it an overpromise by a company that essentially low-balled to get the contract?” he said Wednesday afternoon.

Taranis Contracting Group is the contractor on all current city-funded paving contracts and is also working on other contracts throughout the region.

With the company on so many projects, Boshcoff said the unfinished projects are clear evidence the company has overcommitted.

“The question now is what are we going to do next year if they are delayed already and the city wants to start a new infrastructure program,” he said. “It can only lead to problems.”

For so many projects to remain unfinished at this time of year is rare, Boshcoff added.

“We used to divide up the contracts in portions so the city could be guaranteed not only a lower price but to ensure the work was done before Halloween,” he said.

The compnay could not provide a response to tbnewswatch.com Wednesday afternoon, but did release an official statement Thursday.
