THUNDER BAY -- Former crown wards who claim they were abused while in foster care have received the green light to proceed with a class action lawsuit against the Province of Ontario.

Justice Helen Pierce made a decision on Friday to allow former Crown wards who were allegedly abused to proceed with a multi-millon dollar class-action lawsuit.

The case, which was filed three years ago, includes children who were Crown wards at any time after January 1966.

One of the lead plaintiffs is Toni Grann from Thunder Bay, and more than 500 class members have signed on.

The proposed lawsuit claims the Province of Ontario failed to protect the children by not applying for compensation claims on their behalf.

None of the claims have been proven in court.

Now that the class action is proceeding, all current and former Ontario Crown Wards are encouraged to contact either the Toronto-based law firm Koski Minsky, or Thunder Bay's Watkins Law Office, to provide information and support the case.
