THUNDER BAY - It should be business as usual at schools across Ontario as the Canadian Union of Public Service Employees and the Ontario government have reached a tentative agreement.

It was announced late Sunday evening that the deal had been reached following days of negotiations and a looming midnight strike deadline that would have seen more than 55,000 education workers across the province take to the picket line Monday morning.

Details of the agreement have not yet been released but will be made public following ratification.

Strike action was announced last week if a deal was not made and it would have involved office administration staff, special education assistants, cafeteria staff, maintenance workers, and custodians.

There are approximately 150 CUPE members with the Lakehead Public School Board who could have been on strike if a deal had not been reached.

Lakehead Board officials said last week that in the event of a strike, schools would remain open.
