THUNDER BAY - After months of negotiations, the Lakehead District School Board has reached a deal with Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 2486. The union represents about 150 custodians, maintenance workers, and cafeteria staff with the board.
CUPE members ratified the three-year deal on Saturday. It had been approved by school board trustees on Dec. 11.
“We are very pleased to have reached an equitable settlement with our CUPE employees,” said Director of Education Ian MacRae in a release. “CUPE members play vital roles in ensuring that our schools are clean and safe learning and working environments.”
CUPE members began work-to-rule actions over in October when talks between their union and the province broke down. The union identified issues like job security and sick leave as key.
"Our members are pleased that they will be entering the holiday season and a new year with [an] agreement in place," said CUPE President Rod McGee.
