UPDATED: Dawson Street detour required its own detour

For the next several days, the detour necessitated by the closure of River Street is changed to Van Norman Street

THUNDER BAY — The detour that hundreds of Thunder Bay motorists have been taking daily to and from work or school since the closure of River Street needed its own detour for awhile this week.

River Street has been shut down since last May between Farrand Street and Elm Street because of a damaged culvert at McVicar Creek.

The city posted detour signs, directing traffic to Dawson Street between Algoma Street and High Street.

But on Monday it announced that for the next few days, the detour itself would be blocked off to through traffic.

It was because of the need to repair a sewer pipe on a section of Dawson.

The city advised motorists to use Van Norman Street as the temporary detour route.

It initially said Dawson Street was expected to reopen by Thursday, but it was already open on Tuesday morning.

NOTE:  This story has been updated to reflect the fact that the city was able to reopen Dawson Street by Tuesday morning rather than Thursday
