NIPIGON, Ont. -- Motorists traveling through the Nipigon area Wednesday afternoon should be prepared for some potential delays.

A Day of Action rally is being held as part of the Idle No More movement. This follows a similar protest at the Lake Helen reserve on Dec. 21.

Wednesday's rally gets underway at noon with a march across the Nipigon bridge scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. That will be followed by a rally at the nearby Highway 11-17 intersection from 2 until 3:30 p.m..

OPP spokesperson Anne McCoy says so far this is the only protest they've been informed about that could impede highway traffic in this region.

And she adds that police plan to monitor the demonstration and control traffic as the protesters travel over the highway bridge.

Meanwhile, Ontario regional Chief Stan Beardy has posted an open letter to First Nation chiefs and councils, urging them to contact their local police if they plan on holding an Idle No More demonstration.

Beardy says he wants people to make their voices heard in a safe environment, and do so in a strong but peaceful manner.
