TORONTO - It seems the deadly coronavirus has made its way to Ontario, with the province's chief medical officer announcing a "presumptive case" has been discovered in Toronto. It's Canada's first confirmed case of the disease, which has killed at least 41 people and infected over 1,400.

Dr. David Williams, a former medical officer of health for the Thunder Bay district, made the announcement alongside Minister of Health Christine Elliott and other public health officials in Toronto early Saturday evening.

The case was discovered at Sunnybrook Hospital, when a man in his 50s fell ill after visiting Wuhan, China, the city at the epicentre of the outbreak. The Chinese government has taken the extraordinary step of locking down the large city and its surrounding area, closing schools and shutting down roads.

Canada joins a rapidly growing list of countries with cases of the disease. In recent days, Japan, the United States, France, Australia, and Malaysia have all announced their own cases.

Officials said the Toronto man is in stable condition, and that those confirmed to have come into contact with him after his return on Jan. 22 are in self-isolation.
