Declutter and donate drive supports students in need

The LUSU Food Resource Centre is in need of cereal, oatmeal, pasta sauce, pasta noodles, and canned vegetables.

THUNDER BAY – Lakehead University and the student union held a Declutter and Donate Drive in support of the on-campus food resource centre on Thursday.

Donations were collected in the university’s Agora. Items included kitchen supplies and non-perishable food.

Sierra Garofalo, the student union’s director of food security, said approximately 100 individual food items were collected along with “a lot of kitchen supplies.”

Food insecurity is a serious problem in Canada and one group in particular who face high levels of food security is post-secondary students.

The LUSU Food Resource Centre is run by students to provide resources and programming for those who are experiencing food insecurity, Garofalo said. The centre supports approximately 200 Lakehead University students every month.

Garofalo said the donation drive is a great way to bring the university community together to help students who need support.

“Unfortunately, our usage has been so high that it has been difficult to keep up with the demands, however events such as these are an extremely huge help,” Garofalo said.

During the donation drive, the food resource centre was accepting pots, pans, utensils, plates, cups, and unopened, non-expired nonperishable food items.

The centre is in need of cereal, oatmeal, pasta sauce, pasta noodles, and canned vegetables.
