KENORA, Ont. — A Sioux Narrows man was fined $7,500 for careless hunting after firing his gun at a deer decoy placed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
The case was resolved recently before a Justice of the Peace in Kenora court.
According to the MNRF, conservation officers had received numerous complaints about unsafe hunting on Maybrun Road, a forest access road off Highway 71 north of Sioux Narrows.
On Dec. 1, 2018, officers set up the fake deer at the side of the road after taking precautions to ensure there would only be one vehicle in the vicinity at a time.
The team watched as an individual approached in a pickup truck, exited the vehicle, and discharged his high-calibre rifle down the road toward the decoy.
In addition to the fine for careless hunting, the man was fined $300 for failing to wear hunter orange.
He also received a six-month hunting licence suspension, and will have to retake the Ontario Hunter Education Program.
