THUNDER BAY—A Justice of the Peace has fined two men from Strathroy, Ontario a total of $8500 for hunting violations.

They were convicted in a Thunder Bay court of shooting from the travelled portion of a provincial highway, carelessly discharging a firearm across a highway and unlawfully hunting a bull moose.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, conservation officers set up a decoy moose adjacent to Highway 811 north of Thunder Bay in October 2017.

They then observed a vehicle approach, with two men inside.

After they exited, one of the men shot at the fake bull moose while standing on the highway.

The other hunter knelt behind the vehicle and shot across both lanes of the road. Court was told that the man's view of oncoming traffic was obstructed by the vehicle when he pulled the trigger.

Both hunters had been licensed to hunt a calf, not a bull.

In addition to the fines, the JP ordered that they complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course before being eligible to apply for another hunting licence.
