Thunder Bay Police say a deceased person was found in this home in the 100 block of Frederica St. East after an explosion on Oct. 3, 2021 (Leith Dunick/TBNewswatch)

THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay man was concerned someone had been hurt after seeing the damage caused to a neighbour's home in the 100 block of Frederica Street East on Sunday night.

"I thought there was someone in that house. There's always somebody there. I was worried about it," Eric Cinq-Mars said.

He initially felt some relief because he didn't see anyone taken away in an ambulance.

However, on Monday afternoon Thunder Bay Police disclosed that a deceased person had been located inside the home.

The TBPS Major Crimes Unit is now involved in the investigation into what police are calling a sudden death and fire.

Cinq-Mars said he was in his residence across the street when he heard a loud bang outside at about 10 p.m.

"I looked through my window and the flames just started to show up. It was just a big boom, and then everybody was panicking. Everybody was coming out. And I just called the emergency [number]."

Whatever caused the explosion also caused a section of the brickwork on the home's front wall to be blown into the yard.

Cinq-Mars said there's some speculation in the neighbourhood about the source of the blast, but he's sure investigators will be able to determine what actually happened.
