THUNDER BAY — Firefighters were called about a person being in the water near Fisherman's Wharf Wednesday night.

Around 9 p.m., Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a call, where it was confirmed that one person was in the water and another person was attempting to rescue them.

When crews arrived at the location, one team stayed on land to maintain visual contact, while another team launched the rescue boat into the water.

Firefighters quickly located and immediately removed the person from the icy waters of Lake Superior, returning them to shore.

Paramedics were on the scene and assumed patient care; the person was transported to the hospital for further assessment.

TBFR reminds residents to be very cautious around waterways as high-moving spring runoff is extremely dangerous, particularly due to the recent rainfall amounts received throughout the region.

They add that changing ice conditions are unpredictable at this time of year, and residents are reminded to stay off the ice.
