THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has reported another death in which COVID-19 played a contributing or underlying cause, even as several key COVID indicators continued to decline.

It’s the 92nd COVID-related fatality recorded in the district, and the 22nd of this year.

There were 32 people in district hospitals with COVID-19, unchanged since the health unit’s last report on Wednesday.

Three of those people were being treated in the ICU, up from one on Wednesday.

The TBDHU’s testing positivity rate declined to 13.8 per cent for the week of May 15 to 21 – down from 17.7 per cent the previous week, and 24 per cent the week before that.

The health unit was tracking six outbreaks in vulnerable settings, including Southbridge Roseview Manor, three areas within Hogarth Riverview Manor, the Shelter House, and another location not publicly disclosed.

The health unit reported 112 new cases since its last report Wednesday, and 217 active cases, up slightly from 208.

Health authorities continue to caution those numbers offer little insight into the local spread of the virus,  due to limited PCR testing access.
