A city campaign to get out the vote inspired a local filmmaker to get involved in municipal politics the best way he knew how – with a camera.

Paul Morralee has spent the last 100 days documenting city council. The filmmaker said he got the idea during the last municipal election when city clerk John Hannam had an aggressive campaign to increase voter turnout.

Morralee said following city officials around for the last 100 days was a real eye-opener into the work that they do.

"I feel that after the experience of doing the hundred days, it humbled me. It made me realize that there are a lot of things that go on in the community that I didn’t have a clue about," he said.

Morralee will now cut eight hours of video from more than 35 events and 140 minutes of interviews into a 45 minute documentary called 100 Days of City Hall.

From committee meetings to ribbon-cuttings, Morralee said the documentary will show a dynamic range of city council.

"It’ll also be conversational in manner," he said. "People can get a better understanding of the responsibilities of the mayor and council and administration."

The documentary premieres Mar. 31 at Paramount Theatre. Admission is $5 with show times at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
