Dogs relocated from northern First Nations (4 photos)

So far, over 200 dogs have been taken south for adoption

STOUFFVILLE, Ont. — The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says a Thunder Bay-based airline has again assisted in the relocation of dogs from remote northern communities.

On Monday, a dozen dogs from a First Nation 350 kilometres north of Thunder Bay were picked up by North Star Air, followed by the transfer of a second group of dogs from another community to Kapuskasing.

After a rest stop there, the dogs were loaded onto a special bus and driven to the SPCA's animal centre in Sudbury for health checks, then taken Tuesday to SPCA facilities in central and southern Ontario where they will be placed up for adoption.

The SPCA said a number of organizations cooperated in the transfer, one of several this year that to date have resulted in the relocation of more than 200 dogs from remote communities.

Spokesman Daryl Vaillancourt said the SPCA is working together with the communities "to find homes for animals and to share resources and services that are often not available, such as veterinary care and spay/neuter services."
