Thunder Bay’s Dolores Wawia was among 26 people appointed Tuesday to the Order of Ontario.

A pioneer of Aboriginal education and a well-known storyteller sometimes known locally as the “Frog Lady,” Wawia has been touted for championing Aboriginal teacher education and has long been known as an inspiration and role model for thousands of First Nation students.

Hired in 1975 to teach at Lakehead University’s newly established teacher education program, Wawia was the first Aboriginal woman in Northwestern Ontario to get a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master’s degree in education, according to a 2006 article in Lakehead University magazine.
