THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay firefighters had to deploy their mechanical Jaws of Life to free an occupant of a car involved in a collision in the north-side downtown area Wednesday afternoon.

A compact car and a sedan collided just before 2.30 pm at the intersection of Cumberland and Pearl streets.

The fire service says it had to cut off the door on the driver's side of the smaller vehicle in order to extricate a female.

She and a male occupant of the car were both taken to hospital by ambulance.

The intersection is controlled by signal lights.

Thunder Bay Police are investigating the collision.
