THUNDER BAY — People in the Thunder Bay area with mobility challenges are getting a new option for receiving COVID-19 vaccinations.

The Thunder Bay district Health Unit has announced the opening of drive-through vaccine clinics at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition grounds.

These are for individuals with mobility challenges or who require a sensory-friendly appointment.

Recipients will not have to leave their vehicles to get an immunization shot.

Appointments may be booked online, or people needing assistance should call 625-5900.

The following are eligible to book an appointment for a drive-through clinic:

  • individuals who are 12 years and older who need a first dose. Note that individuals 12 to 17 years old should select a clinic where the Pfizer vaccine is given.
  • Individuals who are 12 years of age and older who received their first dose at least 28 days before second dose appointment date. Individuals who are 12-17 must have a second dose of Pfizer. Individuals who are 18 years and older can have a dose of either mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna).
  • Individuals who have received a first dose with AstraZeneca vaccine at least 8 weeks before the second dose appointment date
  • For individuals in the District communities, please contact your respective Family Health Teams, or visit https://www.tbdhu.com/districtvaccines for more information on booking your vaccination appointment.

The TBDHU says clients must complete the COVID-19 online screening tool within 24 hours of their appointment time, and should be prepared to show the results on their phone. People without access to a phone will be screened at the door.

Current dates for drive-through clinics are July 7, 9, 14 and 16  from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Open time slots can be checked online.

Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines will be available.
