THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay man is facing impaired driving charges after a collision involving a cyclist on Cumberland Street near the Marina Park Overpass.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the 400s block area of Adelaide Street around 6:20 p.m. Sunday, following reports of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

Officers located a damaged sedan and the accused male driver at the scene and, according to a TBPS release, “observed several signs” that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

Police learned the collision had occurred as the driver was travelling southbound on Cumberland Street North, approaching the Marina Park Overpass, when his vehicle came into contact with the cyclist, “who was travelling eastbound on a bicycle across the crosswalk," according to the police release.

The motorist had then driven the cyclist to Adelaide Street, where they were met by paramedics, police said.

Paramedics with Superior North EMS transported the involved cyclist to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation and treatment of their injuries.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and transported to police headquarters. Samples of the motorist’s breath confirmed they were impaired by alcohol, police said.

A 35-year-old Thunder Bay man stands charged with Operation of a Motor Vehicle while Impaired and Operation of a Motor Vehicle with Blood Alcohol Concentration exceeding 80 mg per 100ml of blood.

The accused was released with conditions and a future appearance date.
