THUNDER BAY — A pickup truck careened into a home on the corner of Margaret and Shuniah streets around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.
That's when homeowner Lee Johnson, who was watching the Leafs game, heard the crash.
"I thought the bomb went off, frankly, and it was so so loud and it vibrated the ground so much that a neighbour a street over from me texted me this morning and said she heard and felt it."
His son, who was upstairs at the time, had heard screeching sounds before the impact.
Johnson said he was shocked when he saw what happened.
"I came running upstairs, and we opened up the front door and his truck was pointing in the opposite direction that he hit the house.
"It was really odd, he must have hit so fast and so hard that the impact spun him around,"
Johnson said he saw the driver try to flee in the vehicle, but the front wheel had been damaged from hitting the concrete stairs, and instead, was left tearing up the front lawn of his property.
When police arrived, they observed that the driver appeared to be impaired.
After an investigation, police arrested and charged a 25-year-old male from Thunder Bay with impaired driving and other related charges.
The accused has been released from custody and has a future date with the court, along with a 90-day license suspension.
Synergy North was at the home on Friday to replace a pole that was broken in the collision.
