Police have located and arrested the suspected impaired driver who fled the scene of a collision Saturday afternoon.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers were originally dispatched to a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of James and Arthur Streets just after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.
Police learned a male driver was travelling eastbound in the centre-lane of Arthur Street West when he rear-ended a vehicle stopped at a red light at the intersection of James Street South. The driver then reversed, colliding with a vehicle behind him, before accelerating forward and again running into the first vehicle he had struck.
The driver then fled the scene prior to police arriving.
An investigation led officers to a residential address in the 300 block of Francis Street East. There police located the sedan suspected to be involved in the collision.
Police located the driver and while speaking with him noticed several signs he may have been impaired by alcohol.
The driver failed a roadside breath test, at which point he was transported to the Thunder Bay Police Service headquarters for further evaluation.
Further tests confirmed the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was nearly double the legal limit.
A 67-year-old Thunder Bay man was charged with Driving While Impaired by Alcohol, Driving While Impaired Blood Alcohol Concentration, and Failure to Stop After Accident.
