Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay’s money woes have forced the charity to postpone its planned 2014 home build.
The organization cited a drop in donations, combined with several break-ins at its ReStore retail outlet as the reasons for the decision.
Chairman of the board Andrew Campbell said she’s disappointed to have to make such a drastic decision and to disappoint families waiting for a home.
In recent months, Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay has experienced a significant reduction in donations and we are therefore unable to provide our organization's portion of funding to match the house build sponsor,” Campbell said in a release.
In addition to a shortfall in donations, Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay has also been the victim of several break-ins over the past months with thieves causing significant property damage and stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of building materials from the ReStore including a much used truck.
Campbell added the project will be on hold until next year.
“Habitat for Humanity is very grateful for the support of Thunder Bay Insurance and Gillons Insurance. It is unfortunate that the construction of this home has to be postponed to 2015.”
