THUNDER BAY – A Dryden, Ont. business was among thousands around the world to receive a bomb threat on Thursday.

Dryden Police say the company, which was not named, received an email demanding $20,000 in bitcoin in return for not detonating a bomb, which had supposedly been planted at the business.

Calling the email spam, police said nonetheless the threats led to numerous evacuations around the world and law enforcement investigations in the U.S., Canada and New Zealand.

“Police are both investigating potential threats and asking victims to exercise caution.”

Dryden Police, in a release issued on Friday, said the business in question recognized the email as spam, reported it to police and did not turn over any currency to the scammers.
