Dryden won't reduce councillors, Red Lake does

The city of Dryden continues to face major financial difficulties.

It’s already sold off the telephone company and cut dozens of jobs. One of the other cost saving measures council pondered during the 2013 budget process was reducing the number of members sitting around the table.
Dryden currently has seven councillors, including the Mayor.  Earlier in the year, Council began looking at reducing the number to five.

But during a discussion on the issue this week, it seemed like there was no longer support for the reduction.  Dryden Mayor Craig Nuttall said councillors already put in a lot of time on committees and boards.

Going to five members would have saved the city less than $20,000 a year. Nuttall doesn't see the idea coming up again.

Elsewhere, the mayor and council in Red Lake have agreed to reduce their number of elected officials.  This week they voted to go from seven members to five for the 2014 election.
