Dryer fire forces evacuation of apartment building

Tenants of a south side apartment building were forced to evacuate after a dryer caught fire in the basement.

THUNDER BAY – A late afternoon fire had several tenants standing out in the rain after a dryer caught fire, filling the basement with smoke.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a structural fire just before 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon on the 1900 block of Frederica Street West.

Upon arrival, crews discovered the basement was filled with smoke and a second alarm was called. The fire was quickly brought under control and additional responding units were cancelled.

A member of Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said on the scene that the fire was caused by lint in the dryer and resulted in some minor scorching on the wall.

Tenants living in the basement unit have not been allowed to return as crews continue to ventilate the building. Tenants living on other floors have been allowed back inside.

There were no reports of injuries and damage was minimal. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue are reminding the public to clean out lint traps in dryers as it can easily cause a fire.
