Security at social housing across the city is getting a boost.
On Thursday the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board approved $220,000 for security to patrol properties and an additional $115,000 to continue installing lights in an effort to make buildings safer.
The improvements are part of a series of recommendations made to the board.
Acting CAO Bill Bradica said measures have already been in place at some properties.
"A number of tenants are saying that they do feel safer," he said.
Security has been escorting unwanted people from properties and better lighting, along with newly installed security cameras, has deterred criminal activity. But Bradica said the board needs more time to determine the success of the measures.
The board is also meeting with the Thunder Bay Police Service later this month to discuss how both organizations can make social housing safer.
