Canada Post employees are back to work, but social assistance recipients in the Thunder Bay area still being asked to pick up their cheques in person

The District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administrative Board implemented the special pick-up system at the CLE Coliseum in case Canada Post was still on strike at the time of cheque distributions.

More than 3,000 cheques are being handed out, and hundreds of people waited for the doors to open Wednesday, including clients, vendors and landlords.

DSSAB administrator Melissa Harrison said it was important to have a backup plan because so many people rely on their services.

Cheques will also be available this Thursday, and next Monday and Tuesday at the Coliseum building, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Ontario disability support cheques and child disability cheques will be available for pick-up at the CLE Thursday and Monday only.
