THUNDER BAY - For those who work with people living in poverty and see the ongoing need on a daily basis, it was an easy decision to provide a little extra help and give to an organization working to help lift people out of poverty.

“I think our staff have a true buy in to giving back to the community solely based on where we work and the work we do here with the population in the district of Thunder Bay,” said Michelle Wojciechowski, supervisor of intake and eligibility with the Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board.

On Tuesday, staff at the DSSAB donated $24,101 to the United Way of Thunder Bay, which will be used to fund community services to help those living in poverty.

Wojciechowski said the money was raised by the more than 180 staff members through payroll deductions, dress down days, and after work events like golf tournaments.

“Staff have a lot of fun with it, especially when we do different events outside of work to raise money,” she said. “It’s always a good turnout and it’s a good feel for staff to take part in it.”

The fundraiser is done annually and staff raise an average of $24,000 every year. Jodie Wilson, director of philanthropy and community engagement with United Way of Thunder Bay, said every dollar received is significant.

“So one this large is truly appreciated and I am here to congratulate the efforts of the employees here at DSSAB for really caring about their community and for participating on this level,” she said. “It’s really impressive.”

The staff were presented with a giving award and Wilson said it is important that those who participated receive the recognition they deserve.

“It’s really important that everybody feels that they paid a part in lifting our community up and I want everybody to feel thanked and appreciated for their efforts,” Wilson said. “Money is money but the impact is what’s really going to create change.”

Wilson added she is pleased to see the staff at DSSAB, who already work every day helping people living in poverty, willing to give a little more.

“I think it’s truly a testament to their dedication to their commitment of making Thunder Bay the best it can be,” she said. “Not only do they help in the area of service or the area of need, but they contribute. It just gives me goosebumps.”
