THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay has temporarily shut down a pedestrian underpass that links Simpson Street to the residential area east of the CPR tracks.

Access to what's commonly known as "the subway" will be blocked for about one month, or until repair work is complete.

The repairs include stripping of the existing paint, replacing it with new anti-graffiti paint, and upgrading of the interior lighting.

Roads Manager Brad Adams says the work is overdue. "We've painted it many times, and the paint is starting to come off, so we're going to do a proper job and strip the old paint off and repaint it, and bring the lighting up to where we don't have any dark areas within the subway," Adams said.

Pedestrians will have to use an alternate route, such as the Pacific Avenue overpass, during the construction period.

The project will cost about $90,000

"Once it's done, hopefully it will be a better environment" in the tunnel, Adams said.
