Easter Seals Celebrity Skate canceled

THUNDER BAY – The Celebrity Skate for Easter Seals has been put on hiatus this year.

The Celebrity Skate for Easter Seals had been held every July for the past 15 years, giving local kids a chance to raise money, so that they could skate with NHLers and get autographs. 

Organizer Rhonda Harrison said they had to cancel the event this year, because they were unable to secure funding for a summer student to help run the event.

She added that only three local NHL players turned out the last couple of years, and the number of participants had dropped from a peak of 300 kids down to just 66 last year.

The skate has raised around $180,000 for the charity since it began.
