THUNDER BAY - Do you have old electronics that are dead and no longer needed? Don’t throw them in the garbage. Instead hand them over for proper disposal to not only divert them from landfills, but also help local environmental organizations.

On Sunday May 5, EcoSuperior through the Ontario Electronic Stewardship Program will be hosting a free electronic waste pick-up at Bay Village Coffee on Bay Street.

Items accepted include display devices, i.e. televisions and computer monitors, computers, keyboards and mice, printing and copying devices, telephones and answering machines, cell phones and pagers, home theatre devices, and image and audio devices.

Old devices are broken down to recycle raw materials such as glass, plastics, and metals including gold and copper. When electronic devices are disposed of in landfills, substances such as mercury and lead can become environmental and health and safety hazards.

Handing over electronic devices to a e-waste collection can also prevent them from being illegally exported or handled by irresponsible recyclers.

Donations will be made to EcoSuperior by the Ontario Electronic Stewardship Program based on the volume of material collected.

Previously the free e-waste collection also accepted tires, however, due to the discontinuation of the Ontario Tire Stewardship Used Tire Program, tires will no longer be accepted.

The e-waste recycling event will be held on Sunday May 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bay Village Coffee on Bay Street.
