THUNDER BAY – Eight new cases of COVID-19 were announced by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit Saturday, bringing the total number of active cases in the district to 117.

Six of the new cases were in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas, which includes Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, Gillies, Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and some unorganized territories.

All but one of those cases is considered the result of close contact with a previously identified case, while the health unit had not yet identified an exposure category for the remaining individual.

Two other cases were announced in unspecified district communities. Those include Dorion, Red Rock, Nipigon, Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Marathon, Manitouwadge, and Greenstone.

One of those cases was a result of close contact, and one had no identified exposure category.

The news saw the district’s active cases rise to 117, an increase of five from Friday. There have been a total of 366 cases since the pandemic arrived in Thunder Bay in March, with 244 resolved, and 5 deaths.

Three people were hospitalized with the virus as of Saturday morning, a reduction of two from Friday. One of those individuals was in the Intensive Care Unit.

The Southbridge Roseview long-term care home, the site of a large COVID-19 outbreak, also announced via its website Saturday that four staff members had recovered from the virus. There are now 45 active cases among residents, and 22 among staff. Three residents have died as a result of the outbreak.
