THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced eight new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.

All of the new cases are a result of close contact with an existing case, the health unit said, and all involve individuals in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas. That includes Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, Gillies, Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and some unorganized territories.

All eight individuals are now self-isolating, the health unit reported early Sunday afternoon.

The news brought the number of active cases in the Thunder Bay District to 77.

The district has now experienced a cumulative total of 226 cases, with 149 considered resolved - including one death attributed to the virus in April.

109 of those have been announced since Nov. 6, with at least one new case announced each day since.

Many of the recent cases are connected to local pickleball games, and an outbreak at two supported living centres.

The recent spike led the province to move the district into the yellow zone in its COVID-19 Response Framework on Friday.
