THUNDER BAY – COVID-19 cases continue to grow throughout the Thunder Bay District, with public health authorities announcing eight new cases on Sunday.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit confirmed five new cases in the Thunder Bay area, and three in unspecified district communities late Sunday morning.
The news came as Ontario reported record-high single-day case numbers for the second straight day, reporting 1,924 new cases Sunday.
Of the Thunder Bay area cases, two are considered the result of close contact with a previously identified case, two had no known exposure to the virus, while an exposure category for the fifth was listed as pending.
All three new cases in district communities were considered a result of close contact with an existing case.
As of Sunday, there were 120 active COVID-19 cases confirmed in the district.
Four individuals were hospitalized with the virus, an increase of one from Saturday. One of those individuals was in the Intensive Care Unit.
The district has had a cumulative 374 cases since the pandemic began, with 249 resolved, and five deaths associated with the virus.
The Southbridge Roseview long-term care home, hit with a major outbreak in recent weeks, reported one new resident case Sunday, and 11 new recoveries among facility staff. There are now 46 active cases among residents, and 11 among staff.
