THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay voters have responded in significant numbers to the availability of advance electronic voting options in Monday's municipal election.

As of late Monday morning, 24,379 voters had cast their ballots either over the internet or by telephone.

The city clerk's office said 18,900 of the ballots were filled online.

City Clerk John Hannam, the returning officer for the election, had said previously he was hoping to see "at least 50 per cent" of the votes in this election to be cast electronically.

If the turnout is similar to that of 2014, when about 37,000 voters participated in an election in which electronic voting was not an option, that objective will be surpassed easily.

There are about 80,000 eligible voters this year.

Voting continues online, over the phone and at local polling stations until 8:00 p.m.
