Elementary school students mush around with dog sleds

Students from Algonquin Avenue School were mushing up a storm Friday as they got the chance to experience the sport of dog sledding.

It's all thanks to a partnership between the school and Boreal Journeys sled dog kennel.

The Grade 7 students were able to take a ride on the dog-powered sled. It's the same group of students that built quinzhee huts and then spent a night in them.

The school’s vice-principal Darren Lentz said the class has been studying dogsleds and they're also writing a song about it with local musician Rodney Brown.

Lentz added that it's a great way to culminate their learning about the wilderness.

Rodney Brown was able to participate with the class through the Learning through the Arts program, which encourages students to learn through drama, music, and visual arts.
