Elevated E. Coli prompts swimming advisory in Shuniah

Swimming advisory posted at West Loon Dock

WEST LOON LAKE — A swimming advisory has been issued for the West Loon Dock area after water testing revealed elevated levels of E. coli, raising health concerns for lake users.

The advisory was issued after the Thunder Bay District Health Unit informed the Municipality of Shuniah of a failed water quality test on Tuesday. The presence of E. coli in the sample led the health unit to request that an “unsafe for swimming” notice be posted at the dock and shared across municipal communication platforms.

“We’ve confirmed the advisory location on the health unit’s website and taken the necessary steps to inform the public,” said Paul Greenwood, Chief Administrative Officer for the Municipality of Shuniah.

A secondary water sample was collected later Tuesday, with results expected by Wednesday.

In the meantime, the public is urged to avoid swimming in the West Loon Dock area until further notice.

The cause of the contamination has not yet been confirmed.

Greenwood noted that any questions regarding the source or whether other areas of the lake are affected should be directed to the health unit.

For ongoing updates, residents can visit the health unit website or follow the Municipality of Shuniah’s official channels.
