THUNDER BAY — The cost of using natural gas in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario is expected to increase in January 2026.

Enbridge Gas Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board for permission to change its natural gas distribution rates effective New Year's Day.

For a typical residential customer, the company says the annual bill impact would be $45.11.

The average commercial customer would see an increase of $44.91.

Enbridge says the rate hikes are based on an OEB-approved formula that's tied to inflation and other factors.

The energy board typically approves applications for rate increases.

Customers, however, have the option to make submissions to the OEB before it makes a decision.

In this instance, application EB-2025-0163 may be viewed and commented on through the board's website until Aug. 25, 2025.
