The end of the city’s construction season in nearing with the remaining projects nearing the final stage, said project engineer Rick Harms.

There are about six projects still underway including Rosslyn Road, Amelia and Francis Streets in Westfort, Dublin Avenue, Dawson Street and Golf Links Road.

“All these projects are approaching the final paving stage and we expect next week to be a busy week finishing up paving on these streets,” said Harms.

This week’s rain has caused delays with the projects; Harms said they could have wrapped up some of the projects by Friday if it hadn’t been for the wet weather.

This year’s budget for roadwork and utility upgrades was just shy of $11 million with $5.5 million for roads and the rest for utility work like sewage and water main upgrades.

Harms said the money comes primarily through the city tax rate, the federal gas tax and rate structure for utilities.

More than 13 kilometres of streets were resurfaced; 10 kilometres of bike lanes were added to city streets and 25 kilometres of recreational trails were upgraded. Five kilometres of sidewalk was replaced and 581 metres of new sidewalk was also added.

Projects slated for next year include continued work on Government Road and streets in the Jumbo Gardens area as well as some possible work on Pioneer Drive. And while Onion Lake Road has made CAA’s Worst Roads list, Harms said it is tentatively scheduled for repair in 2012 and it’s subject to available budget.

“There are a lot of kilometres of roads in the McIntyre area and we have made some progress, but Onion Lake Road is still one of the ones not done,” said Harms.

Also scheduled to begin next year is the upgrading, widening and four-laning of Golf Links Road that the city expects to complete over the next two to three years.

“It relies on some additional funding coming through the Renew Thunder Bay initiative and that is still going to be put before council to secure budget funding,” added Harms. In order to finish the current Golf Links Road project, Harms said the street will be closed to through-traffic Nov. 6 and 7.
