THUNDER BAY – Enrolment numbers are down at public board schools this year.

Lakehead Public Schools on Friday released its student numbers for 2017-18, showing that 76 more students have enrolled in public elementary schools this fall, but 139 fewer students are attending the Lakehead board’s four high schools. All told, 8,813 students attend classes at public board schools, a 0.7 per cent drop from the 8,876 students enrolled the year prior.

High-school enrolment dropped from 2,866 in 2016 to 2,727 this year, a decrease of 4.8 per cent. The board had 3,022 high-school students enrolled in 2015.

The good news for Lakehead Public Schools is their elementary number continue to climb, if ever so slightly.

The board in 2016 boasted 6,010 elementary school students, which grew 1.3 per cent to 6,086 in 2017, a second straight year of increases.
