A company that's looking to set up 40 wind turbines in Shuniah released its environmental screening report to the public.
Officials with GDF Suez Energy also produced a map that shows where the windmills will be erected. The cluster would be spread out north of Highway 11-17, between Mount Baldy and McKenzie Station Road. Shuniah Reeve Maria Harding said that unlike the Big Thunder Wind Park in Neebing, she doesn't expect a lot of public opposition to this project.
That's because the turbines would all be located six to seven kilometres from the nearest residence in the area. A public meeting on the project will be held next month so that Shuniah residents can provide their input.
The project was first proposed by Ventus Energy in 2004. GDF Suez now owns Ventus.
The environmental screening report and the map can be viewed at the Shuniah Municipal office.
The public meeting is scheduled for March 11 at the MacGregor Community Centre.
