Environmental study focuses on Thunder Bay harbour

An environmental risk study on the northern part of the Thunder Bay harbour is being reviewed.

The main concern is an outfall by the old Cascades Mill. Environmental Scientist Susan Winch says sediments that were produced by the pulp and paper process could pose a risk in the future.

“The levels as they are now do not pose much of a risk,” she said during an interview with CKPR Radio Thursday. “It is more of a theoretical and conservative approach to make sure everybody is protected.”

Tests conducted in the target area show a number of chemicals and metals, including mercury.

While there’s no current risk to humans, there are concerns about the potential impact on area wildlife.
