THUNDER BAY - One man was sent to hospital following a fire that sparked from the engine of an excavator on Tuesday morning.
At about 10:30 a.m., crews responded a fire at an industrial site on Hazelwood Drive which produced thick black smoke that could be seen from several miles away.
The vehicle fire did not threaten adjacent buildings.
"Within minutes of water being applied to the blaze, it was brought safely under control," a press release from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said.
Fire fighters applied medical first aid to a worker on scene who had attempted to extinguish the fire, and had suffered smoke inhalation. He was sent to hospital.
The cause of the blaze was determined later to be due to mechanical issues within the engine compartment.
