THUNDER BAY— Starting on Monday, roadways will be closed in and around the intersection of Algoma and McIntyre streets
Over the next month, the City of Thunder Bay will be closing multiple sections of road in the McIntyre Street area for infrastructure repairs and to ensure public safety during the project.
“McIntyre Street is one of the last major city streets that is under the PPCP, which is the pollution Prevention and Control Plan,” said Lisa Parent, project engineer.
The project involves separating the catch basin from sanitary sewers to reduce combined sewer overflows. The infrastructure renewal is part of the city’s environmental protection goals, said Parent.
Phase one will include the closure of Algoma from Van Horne Street to Angus Street, and the closure of McIntyre from Court Street to Ruttan Street.
Phase two will close McIntyre at Algoma and Ruttan.
The third and final phase includes the closure of McIntyre Street at Algoma Street and at Farrand Street, Ruttan Street at Van Horne Street and at Angus Street and Shuniah Street at Meek Street.
“Follow the signage and try to be mindful of the equipment there and make sure that you take a route that's safe,” said Parent.
“Access to homes will still be maintained and we're going to try to minimize inconvenience,” she added.
“There will be different detours at different parts of the timeline, this entire construction may take up to one month, about four weeks,” she said.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and use alternate routes where possible, said a media release.
