Exploding propane cylinders reported at overnight encampment fire

THUNDER BAY — No one was injured in a serious fire at a Simpson Street encampment late Thursday night.

"Callers reported that tents were ablaze and that propane cylinders were exploding at the scene," according to a media release from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.

Firefighters responded to reports of the fire shortly before midnight, said the release.

The fire department said crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby tents and shelters.

No injuries were reported, according to the release, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

"The incident highlighting the dangers posed by open flame and propane appliances", said the fire department. It encourages the public to "exercise caution and follow recommended safety procedures when using these devices."
