UPDATE: Expressway crash leads to fatality

A 29-year-old man was killed in the crash, which involved a passenger vehicle and a transport.

THUNDER BAY -- Ontario Provincial Police say there has been a fatality following a crash between a transport and a passenger vehicle near the intersection of the Thunder Bay Expressway and Oliver Road. 

The 29-year-old male driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead following the crash, while the 23-year-old transport driver suffered minor injuries, according to a release issued on Saturday morning by local OPP. 

Police closed the northbound lanes of the Expressway, between Oliver Road and the Harbour Expressway, at about midnight on Saturday while they conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. 

A heavily damaged vehicle was loaded onto a tow truck on Saturday morning. The transport sufferd significant damage to the rear section of its trailer. 

Police said they expected the closure would last a total of eight hours. 

The name of the victim has not yet been released. 

Police advise northbound motorists to detour on Golf Links Road while the highway is closed.
