THUNDER BAY -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says the demand for participation in a NEXUS enrollment workshop for the Thunder Bay and northern Minnesota areas was so large, another day had to be added to the program.
NEXUS is a bi-national, Canada-United States initiative for pre-approved, low-risk travellers entering either country at designated air, land and marine points of entry.
The program enables registrants to enter both countries more quickly.
After initially setting aside two days for interviews (April 27 and 28) at Grand Portage, Minnesota, CBP has just announced that the workshop has been extended to April 29.
A spokesperson said the first two days are "completely full."
CBP and Canada Border Services agents will both be conducting interviews with applicants.
The NEXUS process begins with an application—available online—followed by a background investigation and an in-person interview including a risk assessment.
NEXUS can be used at numerous airports including Toronto and Winnipeg, and numerous land crossings including Fort Frances/International Falls.
Enrollment provides the additional benefit of access to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration's TSA Pre Check, offering expedited screening through airport security checkpoints including being able to leave shoes, light outerwear and belts on, and not having to remove laptops from carrying cases.
